MARUCHO RYOKAN -Articles (3)-

At the same time, falsified spring quality was uncovered at several onsen resorts near the Kanto region, developing into a nationwide social issue.
As a result, some began to question Nagayu Onsen's claim of being “Japan's No.1 Carbonated Hot Spring”, arguing that there was no numerical evidence to support it.
In response, in 2006, Oita Prefecture urged the Nagayu Onsen Tourist Association to refrain from making such claims.

Simply in terms of carbon dioxide concentration, there are certainly several places in Japan with high carbonic acid content (free carbon dioxide).
Other hot spring resorts that also claim to be “Japan's No.1 Carbonated Hot Spring” include Michinoku-no-Yu (Aomori Prefecture), Yoshikawa Onsen (Hyogo Prefecture), and Yuya Onsen (Gifu Prefecture).
The carbon dioxide concentration of these hot spring areas was much higher than that of Nagayu Onsen.
However, at the 3rd National Hot Springs Summit in 2007, several hot spring experts agreed that there was no dispute that “Nagayu is the No.1 carbonated hot spring in Japan”.
In fact, when considering the 3 factors of “Carbon dioxide concentration”, “Temperature of the source”, and “Volume of spring water”, there is no other hot spring resort where carbonated spring water can be enjoyed anywhere at any time as in Nagayu Onsen.
In particular, the issue of “Carbon dioxide concentration” is that in other hot spring resorts, the temperature is too low for people to bathe in. If the water is heated, of course the carbon dioxide gas is lost.
Considering that the temperature of the spring must be around 40°C to allow people to bathe comfortably, Nagayu Onsen is by far the best choice.
In December of the same year, the Nagayu Onsen Tourist Association re-declared itself “Japan's No.1 Carbonated Hot Spring”.
Mr. Ito, who was serving as Vice Chairman (and now Chairman) of the Nagayu Ryokan Association at the time, felt a great sense of relief.
